Obituary of Hugh Russell Smith

It is with great sadness that we must announce the passing of Hugh Russell Smith on Tuesday, March 19, 2024 at the Sackville Memorial Hospital. Hugh passed away peacefully at the age of 83, following a brief illness.

Born on March 14, 1941 in Point de Bute, NB, he was the son of the late Gerald James Smith and Jessie Sarah (Russell).

Hugh was employed with Dexter's Construction for twenty-nine years after which he was employed with the Town of Sackville for eighteen years. He was a workaholic, enjoyed farming, being in the woods and his sawmill. Hugh and Barb travelled to Nashville for a trip of a lifetime to The Grand Old Opry and enjoyed car trips travelling all over Atlantic Canada and greatly enjoyed their visits to family friends in Windsor, NS, playing card games and sharing lots of laughs. His grand dogs, Eddie, Gracie, Ollie and Ziggy were his pride and joy, his favorite 4-legged friends. Hugh will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Hugh will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 58 years, Barbara (Sears) Smith; his children, Randy Smith, Crystal Smith and Jason (Joanne) Smith; his siblings, Rodney (Dorothy) Smith, Sheilah (Austin) Ward, Melbourne (Wendy) Smith, Ralph (Joan) Smith, Allan (Debbie) Smith and Colin Smith; his four grandchildren, Candace, Joseph (Karen), Justin and Julie; his two great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Aubree; his many cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as by his extended family and friends.

Besides his parents, he was pre-deceased by his brother, Hudson Smith and his wife, Carolyn Smith, as well as by his baby brother, Byron Smith.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Erin Campbell and staff of Campbell’s Funeral Home, 89 Bridge Street, Sackville N.B. (506) 364-8188. Visiting hours will take place at the funeral home on Friday, March 22, 2024 from 6-9 PM. The funeral service will take place at the funeral home on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at 2 pm with Rev. Mark Reece officiating.
