Obituary of Gertrude Fannie (Hicks) Wheaton

It is with deep sadness that the family of Gertrude Fannie Wheaton announces her passing at the Drew Nursing Home on Sunday, April 2, 2023 at the age of 92.

Born on August 7, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Olive (Kaye) Sears and Weldon “Pug” Hicks, both of Midgic, NB.

Gertrude lived to serve and she liked nothing better than cooking a big meal for her family to enjoy. She was active in church until she was unable to go due to her illness. Gertrude was a wonderful singer, and often sang with her family at home and in the car. She was always humming some hymn or some country song. Gertrude contributed to countless church suppers, wedding and baby showers, and funerals by making sandwiches and sweets. She was an excellent cook! She kept house for many people from about 1968 until she could no longer do so, in the early 2000’s. One of the strongest things about her was her faith. She loved her Creator and she marvelled at His love for her. Her desire was that others come to know Him as well.

Gertrude will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Judy (Neil) Gillis and her granddaughter, Krysta Gillis; her daughter-in-law, Sandra (Palmer) Wheaton and her grandchildren, Melody, Heidi, Marcy, Emily and Cory with their partners and children; her honorary son and daughter, Dale and Becky Shannon and their children, spouses and grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her many brothers and sisters, their spouses, children and spouses, and their descendants, as well as by many in-laws, too numerous to mention.

Gertrude was pre-deceased by her husband, Herman Kenneth Wheaton; her sons, Benny and Skip (Sandra) Wheaton; her granddaughter, Arielle Gillis; her honorary granddaughter, Beth Shannon; her mother, Olive; her father, Weldon; her older sister, Lillian (Hicks) Neal; her baby sister, Yvonne Sears; her brother, Vaughn Kaye as well as by her brothers, Tommy, Perry and Garnet.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Erin Campbell and staff of Campbell’s Funeral Home, 89 Bridge Street, Sackville, N.B. (364-8188). Visiting hours will take place at the funeral home on Thursday, April 6, 2023 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. The funeral service will take place at Campbell’s Funeral Home on Friday, April 7, 2023 at 2 pm with Pastor Andrew Swanson officiating. The burial will take place in the spring in the Midgic Cemetery.
