Howard, I only met up with a few times in my life (that I remember - you were 12 years older), but I was always interested in you, your family and your music. Your mother, Anita, was my very favourite auntie. She talked to me about you over the years which made me feel closer to you. My father, Lyle, adored you. I got to know your daughter Michelle through you and we have made a strong connection. Your cousin, Marian Dean, with whom you kept in touch with over the years loved you too and once you came back to your home area, she was very kind to you in your final illness. Rest well, cousin!

Although Howard Arnold McRae was known as "Mac" to his American friends & family, he was simply "Howie" to his Canadian family & friends. I have the fondest memories of young Howie growing up at the Cape (Cape Tormentine, New Brunswick). Such a sweet natured kid with big bright eyes and an always ready smile. When he was quite young, I showed him a few banjo chords, and he took off with his music like a rocket ! Everything he touched, whether be the banjo, guitar, violin, piano upright bass or harmonica, he played with such a natural ease, never before seen in our world. His grandfather Alfred Trenholm was himself a fine amateur fiddler, playing locally at many dances. But Howie was in a different league and he headed south to Texas to pursue his dreams. We were always reminded of Howie back home because his fiddle playing grandfather was also a boat builder and lobster fisherman who kept naming his boats after him - Howie M the 1st - Howie M the 2nd etc. My son Bob has very fond memories of spending some time with Howie in Dallas and participating in a jam session. Although I am Howie's uncle, he always felt more like a son to me. Howie, I miss you dearly and may you rest in peace. With all of my love from the bottom of my heart - Lyle Trenholm

Mac was one of the greatest men I had in my life. He was a great musician, cook, father figure and he loved unconditional. I had not seen him in over 30 years but he has always been in my heart and will be forever. He was my father in law for about 7 years and loved like a father. My thoughts and prayers go out to each and everyone that was a part of his life. Memories are forever and we all have them. Hugs and kisses.

Sorry to hear about Howard's passing. I am Howard's first cousin from Prince Edward Island, Son of Aletha(MacRae) and Charles Small. We enjoyed a nice visit with him at the Nursing Home in Port Elgin last fall and many visits to his home in Cape Tormentine in happier times. He was an amazing musician and actually tuned our son, Charlie's first guitar. He played two songs at the same time and told Charlie that when he could do that, he had it mastered. Charlie was only 12 at the time but never forgot it nor did he stop playing. We always got such a kick out of his dry sense of humor and welcoming smile.

My condolences and prayers go out to Mac's family and other close friends. Mac was my rock steady partner in the rhythym section of Tom Morrell's band for over 25 years.. We shared many hours together in the studio, on stage, sharing motel rooms, and traveling to and from gigs. Howard was one of the most talented musicians I ever met. He was adept on bass, fiddle, guitar, piano, and I was told he could hold his own on a saxophone. I think I remember him playing a hornpipe (or pennywhistle?) on a Don Edwards recording.
Beyond being so talented, Mac was a joy to know and spend time with. He was kind, generous, and had a very infectious laugh. He was great friend and I will always remember his smiling face. Via con dios, compadré.

Mac personified happiness. Always a source of light and goodness for each of us. Encouraged me and others to feel good about living, while managing to uplift the room simply with his contagious smile.
Brilliant and lovely human.
Rest him gently.
