Valda Fisher

Obituary of Valda Ellen Fisher

Valda Ellen (MacLeod) Fisher, ninety one years of age, died at the Sackville Memorial Hospital on Friday, November 25th, 2016 in Sackville, New Brunswick. It was a cold, dull day and it seemed like she had made up her mind. The day she turned 18, she had signed up as the youngest Canadian Wren to serve overseas in World War II. Her parents, Alberta Lucille (Taylor) and Malcolm Plaw MacLeod of Toronto had forbidden their eldest daughter to join the Air Force. “So I joined the Navy”, she said. Anyone that knows Val Fisher, knows that she was always good at making up her mind. To make a long story short, Val met Ned Fisher during the wartime in England. And there was good chemistry! When she returned to Canada as a veteran, she graduated with a degree from the University of Toronto in Physical Education. They married in 1950 and Ned was able to persuade her to move to Sackville where they raised three children. She was always crazy about babies and young ones. Many local kids came to nursery school in the basement of the Fisher home. In 1968, Val decided to take her Bachelor of Education degree at Mount Allison University and then began a teaching career in the public school system in Sackville. Teaching Grade 3 for 25 years means that, in a small town, she taught a large number of children who now remember her as a good teacher who only wanted her students to be the best that they could possibly be. She did not take any nonsense! The Lord Sackville Chapter of the IODE presented Val with a 60 year membership pin which she has been very proud of. Through the years she taught many children how to swim. She loved to curl at the Sackville Curling Club. She enjoyed preparing presentations on local history for the Once In A While Club which recently celebrated its 100th year. The Birthday Girls Group and Bridge Club have been a special source of friendship and fun.Val served for many years on the Altar Guild of St. Paul’s Anglican Church. She has been a member of Branch 26 Royal Canadian Legion and is a life member of the Canadian Naval Memorial Trust- HMCS Sackville. Her wartime experience as a motor transport driver in the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service and those life-long friends have always been terribly important to her. She loved the Navy Lady Rose that grew in her garden. She loved the summer cottage and in later years, they travelled to Mexico or Florida in winter. She loved watching for the belugas in the St. Lawrence. She loved playing the stock market. She loved collecting antiques. She loved reading. She loved her doggie Bella. She loved a morning cafe-au-lait with 3 newspapers. She loved prosecco and fresh oysters. And she so loved her man who died 4 years ago. We hope they are together again now. Val and Ned Fisher’s children are Meredith Fisher, Mollie Flemming (Jim)and Malcolm Fisher (Debbie). She will be lovingly remembered by her 8 grandchildren,Robin and Ted Walker, Faith and Andrew Flemming, Abby, Max, Mari (Jock) and Zack Fisher as well as by her 4 great-grandsons, Henry, Ned and Miles Buckler and Charlie Gemmell. Val is predeceased by her husband, Ned Fisher, brother, Donald MacLeod and sister, Mary Lu Wallace. Her brother, Malcolm MacLeod (Carole) lives in Salt Lake City.
