When my own words are so grievously inadequate, I boldly borrow the words of another.
“In Blackwater Woods” by Mary Oliver
Look, the trees
are turning
their own bodies
into pillars
of light,
are giving off the rich
fragrance of cinnamon
and fulfillment,
the long tapers
of cattails
are bursting and floating away over
the blue shoulders
of the ponds,
and every pond,
no matter what its
name is, is
nameless now.
Every year
everything
I have ever learned
in my lifetime
leads back to this: the fires
and the black river of loss
whose other side
is salvation,
whose meaning
none of us will ever know.
To live in this world
you must be able
to do three things:
to love what is mortal;
to hold it
against your bones knowing
your own life depends on it;
and, when the time comes to let it go,
to let it go.
My love to John, Jan and all his family and who have been privileged to know and love him. We were blessed.

I was travelling through Africa, when I heard of the passing of John. After a long communication drought, John and I had spoken, a few weeks before and I was hoping to see him in Sackville, in May. On the day of his passing, I was saying “goodbye” to my soulmate, who was to have joined me in Africa but died suddenly and unexpectedly.
I wrote a long letter to John, who was a good friend, and always inspired me with his kindness, caring and love of friends family and life. I put my letter to John, into a box with memories of Kathy, and threw it into the Zambezi River. That night the box would have gone over Victoria Falls. Hopefully, their spirits will find an adventure of discovery and they will reach the Indian Ocean.
My condolences to Janet and his family. He was a special man.

I met John in the late 70’s . During that time he did a fine woodworking apprenticeship with me and I did an apprenticeship with John and Janet . Through their kindness and generosity I learned a lot about how to live well. It was always an adventure to roll with John . He always saw the humour, and wonder of all the small joys of hard work and play and seemed to revel in the adrenaline highs of daredevil behaviour at times! ( I think he goodnaturedly accepted due scoldings from Janet for such behaviour but secretly thought he might actually fly someday)!
I do hope he is now at peace riding a gentle wave or soaring on a warm thermal under a bright blue sky or star filled night .
My sincere condolences to Janet and family and all those who knew and loved John.

When I saw the opening picture of John’s obituary, I thought ‘John loved trees’. He loved the smell, the sight, the feel, the motion. He loved the way he and trees could work together to create something beautiful to please someone else. But truly, John loved living, especially in the moment. How often through the day did he stop and appreciate the people and things around him. He was kind and helpful, smart and he loved to laugh. And I don’t remember him ever being afraid, except for others. I have memories of John that go back many decades - picking blueberries, digging under the house, sitting on the bench over Shepody, finding split-lath and old newspapers under the horsehair plaster, of laughing and giggling with Janet and friends.. I missed the years of children and grandchildren but I know he was magnificent then too. Dear Janet, Kate and Leighan, and Margaret, Ellen and Elizabeth, Lynn and I send you our love and hope your sadness is vanquished with the memories of the love and laughter.

Dear Margaret, Ellen, Elizabeth
My sincere condolences to all, and to John's family:
What a beautiful video tribute to John. It was so nice to see him with his family. He would have been a very loving family man!
The years have long passed since I have seen the Crawford family. My memories of growing up down the street from their home are very, very fond ones. I spent many times in their home and went on many adventures to the farm with them. My memories far too many to write about. They were a loving family, that also instilled the same for John with his family.
Sincerely,
Colleen Langille Rafuse

I was so saddened to recently learn of John's passing. John was truly one of a kind. I will always remember his unending patience shown to you and I Janet as we had conscripted his expertise to assist us with hanging the SSWF portraits in Town Hall and then again when they were relocated to the Civic Centre. I really never thought one human being could actually have that amount of patience, but he really did and actually smiled and humored us throughout the process. John will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege to know him. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this very difficult time. God's Speed John !!

John brought so much happiness to every member of our family. Whether our time with him was in the middle of the lake, or in the gallery, or on the field or street, he made it a moment to cherish and reflect on how lucky we were to be in this place and together. We have no doubt that his special kind of magic will continue long after his passing. Thanks to his loving family for supporting him and sharing him with us.

Thank you especially, John! Our lives were made so much better because we had the great luck of meeting you in 1999 and living out at the Crawford house on Dorchester Cape for 3 years. Kuusta (in picture with John and Shep the Great). John went out of his way to make sure we all felt happy and "at home" out there... Cézanne and I were shown all around the magical corners of Dorchester Cape on so many impromptu hikes and swims and blueberry picking sessions. We will never forget him.

Peace and love to Janet, Kate and Leighan, and my deepest condolences for this heartbreaking loss.
I met John in 1966, when we sat across the aisle from one another in Grade 10 homeroom class. We quickly became friends, and I am so grateful and happy to say we remained so through all these years. It is clear that John touched everyone he met in some meaningful way - through fun, through thought, through compassion, through joy - through the many outstanding qualities that he gave so freely to us all.
I will forever cherish the memories I have of John, and I will miss him terribly always.

Dear Janet, Katie, Leighan and John’s sisters, Margaret, Ellen and Elizabeth and families. John was an outstanding man who was truly a talented, kind and gentle person. The Crawford’s moved into our neighbourhood on Fawcett Ave. from Pictou, N.S. They were such a special, giving family who would do anything for their neighbours, and many children on the Street were frequent visitors in the Crawford home, and always made to feel so welcome. The family went above and beyond for our family in particular. I am not sure that I always thanked them enough for all of their kindnesses. The family was a very closely knit one. It always amazed me that over the many years since we were neighbours on Fawcett Ave. No matter when or where John saw me, he always called me by name and would tell me some stories regarding me brothers or talk to me about how proud he was of his children and his grandchildren. Being proud of Janet goes without saying. We always laughed when we talked. He was a true and real person. John had a kind word for everyone. The tribute video was beautiful! So sorry to hear today of his illness and of his loss. Please know we are thinking of all of you and wish to send our deepest condolences on your great loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Sincere sympathy to Janet and family on the loss of John. What a craftsman he was and SGCI had many, many pieces to prove that. Just the Board Room alone was gorgeous, all that cherry wood and he was so careful with every piece he handled. He and Don were part of the breakfast club that got started several years ago when they started to realize they weren't going to be here forever. Now they can start another breakfast club and get caught. He visited Don many times during his illness and he told me on Monday that he would say hi to Don for me (and I have no doubt). Janet, we are now in another chapter of our lives (not one that we wanted so soon). Don and I planned on being this cute old couple but God had other plans. I am very saddened by John’s death. I knew John mostly through the pickup softball he organized on Thursday nights in Sackville. For me, softball was one of the highlights of summer here. I have many memories of John from those evenings and from around Sackville more generally. He could be hilarious, both intentionally and unintentionally. An example of the latter occurred after he had cut off a part of one of his fingers. He found it painful to bat, so he started holding the bat with one hand, like a hammer. While he wasn’t able to hit his patented high flies down the third-base line, he could hit grounders with amazing accuracy, putting the ball wherever he wanted to. It was amusing to watch. I have other warm memories of John. He was a kind and generous man, and I am glad that I knew him. My deepest sympathies and condolences to his family.

I am so sorry to hear that John has left us. He was.such a wonderful human being... So gentle and kind, with a heart as big as life itself. He will be so missed. My condolences to all of the family. I will be praying for all of you for comfort during the days and weeks ahead. It was always a joy to see John. He made sure that everyone who came into his path left feeling special. The love that he shared with you, Janet, and with all of the family, was so beautiful. I remember one time, while sitting at the traffic light, I watched both of you running happily, arm in arm, across the street going towards the gallery. It was a wonderful vision of true love that I am so glad that I got to see and a memory that I will always cherish. It was obvious that John loved and 'lived' every moment of life. I am so sad that this wonderful life here on earth has ended way too soon. Love and Hugs to all of you.

John was an original! And one of the kindest people ever. And adventurous - I remember him describing a canoe trip from Dorchester Cape across his beloved Shepody Bay to the Hopewell Rocks. With not a life jacket in sight, he recounted that he got tired part way through so lay down in the bottom of the canoe and had a nap. I was never quite sure whether he was pulling my leg, I think he probably wasn’t. John’s best role came later in life when he was blessed with grandchildren and they were blessed with him. His love for children was evident and profound. We will miss you John. To Janet, Kate and Leighan, our very best wishes and our sympathies always.

Janet and family, we were so shocked to hear of John’s passing. He had such a love for life and adored his family. Once the grand children came into his life you never saw him downtown without them. His obituary and video couldn’t have said it any better! I remember many a time in their younger years he and my brother Graham had some great times and he and I often chatted about them. May all your wonderful memories help you all get through the days ahead. Thoughts and prayers are with you all. Linda & Bud

I remember John's first day at Sackville High. Said he had come from down on the Sunrise Trail.
A couple of years later we hitchhiked to Detroit. We went in late August, just before school began. We thought it best to wait a month after the riots and smoke to clear. And so what, if we missed a few days of grade12. John figured we could always pick peaches, if we ran short of cash. We told folks who gave us drives that we were covering the story of Detroit post riots, for the Sackville Tribune. They believed us...or at least let on.
Over the past fifty plus years, there were many great Crawford stories...pretty well all of them included character and adventure. He was a fine Lad and Friend.
See you later ol' Chum.

John could always smell the cookies in the oven next door and waited for the last batch to go into the oven. I inevitably went on to do other things and would burn the last of the cookies. John loved those charred cookies so much! Our condolences to Janet, Kate and Leighan and families.
