We were fortunate to have taken philosophy courses from Dr. Poole at Mount A. in the 1970s. He had an amazing ability to explain even the most difficult concept in a way that made it understandable -- and he was a warm human being. Our condolences to Dr. Poole's family. His passing will certainly be deeply felt by all.

Aunt Jean and family,
So sorry to hear of Uncle Cyril's passing. I remember with fondness when our family would travel from Newfoundland and stop in for visits while we were "on the mainland"! It's been a while since I have seen any of you, but you are all in my thoughts as you mourn the loss of a great husband and father. With deepest sympathy, Betty Lamont (nee Pullin) & family

Thinking of you, Janet, at this time of loss and remembrance. I'm glad my mother ( Nancy O'Brien ) and I had the chance to visit with your father a few years ago. She and he knew each other from their student days, if I recall, but had not met for many decades. We both send our condolences to you and your mother.

To Cyril's family:
My father ,Vernon Hiscock, knew Cyril years ago, and he and Otto Tucker and Cyril had some wonderful times together.
I remember him coming to our home in Wolfville years ago in the 70ties after we had left Newfoundland.
I still remember the vivid and haunting story of the ghost of Pilley's Island!
I met Cyril again years later at Otto's ,in St John's, and I enjoyed his wit and wonderful company again.
The scotch wasn't bad either!
It was always good to be in the company of three gentlemen who achieved so much with their careers and lives yet who could laugh at themselves and life on the drop of a dime.
They were all great role models!
All three are now with the Lord, and May They All Rest in Peace.
The Salvation Army, where Otto served once, calls it "Promoted to Glory! " and that is the way I like to think about it.
I was indeed blessed to know he and Otto, and laugh so much at their stories about and observations of my native province of Newfoundland!
Please accept my deepest sympathy and May the Lord Bless You all in your hour of sorrow.
Sincerely,
G. Franklyn Hiscock.

Thinking of the Poole family.
I saw Cyril with Debbie this summer when they were out for supper at Cape Jourimaine. He was being greeted by groups of friends from Sackville. I'm sure being able to get out occasionally, while at the Westford, would have made for very enjoyable outings.
Take care

It is with deep regret I learned of the passing of Cyril. I fondly remember dinners at Cyril's and Jean's in 1973 my first year teaching at Mount A. Being from Newfoundland it was wonderful to find fellow countrymen in Sackville.

So sad to hear of Cyril's passing. So glad Janice and I got to visit him last time we were over - we had such fun. Cyril was a wonderful man and reminded me so much of Grampy (in his looks ) and of course Uncle Don in his wit and humour. He sent me a beautiful note when I received an award - it meant a lot to me.
Thinking of you all. RIP Cyril!

To all of Dr. Poole's family my deepest sympathy. I have fond memories of Philosophy 100 class at Mt. A in 1971-72 and Dr. Poole sitting there trying to get us to understand and talk about Plato. I delighted in finding one of his books about NL at Word on the Street a few years back. May you find comfort in your special memories. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

On behalf of the Wessex Society of Newfoundland, I wish to extend condolences to the family of Dr. Cyril Poole. As a close friend of Dr. Otto Tucker, our founding president, Dr. Poole was well known to us as, when in St. John’s, he always attended our meetings and spoke to the Society on a number of occasions. His last attendance was on May 9, 2007, when he was part of a “ small group of kindred spirits” who gathered to celebrate the remarkable humorist and storyteller, our founder, Dr. Tucker, at his last meeting as President of the Society. Dr. Poole was part of the small group who founded the Wessex Society when it was formed in 1984 and we cherish his contributions. David Quinton captured this meeting, including Dr. Poole's address, on video, allowing us to relive these moments. We miss him. Dr. Jean Brown, President

Sincere condolences to all the Poole family. We first met Cyril when we were in Sackville 1969 – 1971. Such a delightful town in which to retire. Cyril was Dean of Arts and Sciences at the time and I was replacing Ken Adams in the Chemistry Department while Ken was on leave. We continued to meet Cyril when he visited St. John's to address the Wessex Society on a number of occasions. His addresses were always informative and jovial. He was very proud of his ancestry.
A recording of Otto Tucker's retirement from President of the Wessex Society was made on CD in which Cyril praised Otto for his contributions. I will forward a copy to Jean.

Dear Jean and family,
As you well know, Cyril was my oldest brother. When Dad died he was a tower of strength to me. We all looked up to him. Most of all, he loved his family dearly. He was so proud of each and every accomplishment, and would write to me of them all.
Lovingly,
Joyce

My sincere condolences to Jean, Janet, Debbie, Stephen and the rest of the family. Our 2 families would often get together when we were young and there was always much laughter. Cyril's good words about me to Memorial Medical School when I was applying there back in the late 70's helped to get me accepted.

Please accept my sincerest condolences on the occasion of Cyril's passing. I worked closely with him when I was head of the Department of Psychology at Memorial University in St. John's and he was Principal at Grenfell. The devotion to his task and his pride in what he was building were both evident. I admired both the idea and the zeal embodied in his efforts to eradicate graffiti. He also was a most congenial colleague.

During many of Dr. Poole's years as Principal of Sir Wifred Grenfell College, I was the Co-ordinator of Chemistry, and, in this role, I had many discussions with Dr. Poole. It was always pleasurable to visit his Office and discuss matters of the College (and occasionally of life). Even on the very few items of disagreement, we 'agreed to disagree.' He was truly a 'gentleman and a scholar'. It was an honour to have known him.

Please accept my sincere condolences. I have many warm memories of Dr. Poole while he was Principal at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College and I was a young faculty member. Much of the growth Grenfell has seen over the years is due to the strong foundations Dr. Poole laid down during his tenure.
