I knew Mrs. Harborne as a child - a friend of Donald Paul's from up the street. She showed me a different kind of household than my own. The Harborne house was music filled and marshmello fluff was first introduced to me in the Harborne kitchen!
I have carried those memories since leaving Sackville over 50 years ago. Dad passed last evening, and that has returned memories of Sackville and the many folks that were kind and supportive to me, flooding back. The people I regret never telling how much I appreciated their influence in my life.
warm regards, Jane Rolfe (nee Mary Jane Milner)

My deepest condolences to Mrs. Harborne's family - she was a remarkable teacher who has had a lifelong impact on my brother Ombor and I, both students of hers at a young age. I remember her gentle and patient nature of course, and how encouraging she was in helping me understand music intuitively and emotionally. Two decades later I'm proud to say I am still a violinist and that classical music remains an important part of my interests, thanks to Mrs. Harborne's role in my early life.

I send my condolences to Donald and Ian on their mother's passing. She was gracious, patient, gentle, a beautiful musician, kind, and had a quiet, twinkling sense of humour, and a sincere interest in people. Polly touched many lives with these qualities; I am grateful to have been one, as a neighbor and one of her students.

I met Polly many summers ago when I began driving my violist father-in-law, Rod, to her little house on Hillcrest every Thursday to play duets with her. I would make the tea and bring some treats which we would enjoy after they played. Once I met Polly the first time, I was hooked - and Thursday mornings became one of my favourite parts of summering in Sackville.
Polly was truly a wonder. I was instantly struck by her gentle, positive nature; her warm smile, her kind eyes, her quick mind. When Rod would opt to stay back at the farm to work on a project with my husband, Rob, I would go to Polly's anyway. No WAY would I miss my weekly visits with her. We talked and laughed, and she would tell me the most amazing stories and show me beautiful family pictures and old newspaper clippings. I remember when she broke her wrist many summers back (Was she 99? 100?) and thought it would be the end of her violin playing. It WASN'T! She healed and was back to playing. I admired this woman more than I can say.
So imagine my joy and surprise when we discovered one summer that we were COUSINS! I was from Montreal and she was a local girl, so it seemed unlikely, but a family tree she showed me caught my eye, and we realized that both of us had grandmothers with the family Burpee! She started to tell me some family lore that my own grandmother had told me! My aunt confirmed the connection and I was thrilled! From that point on, we called each other "cousin", and she assured me, with a little smile, that her remarkable health and longevity was due to the "Burpee genes" we shared. I continued to visit her every summer once she moved to Countryside Residence in Port Elgin - even last year, with an outdoor visit on the little deck with a mask. I will miss those visits more than I can say.
I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to speak with Cousin Polly on the phone from Vancouver only 2 weeks before she passed away, and that I got to tell her once again that I loved her and admired her. Her words of wisdom to me on that call were "It is important to focus on what we still CAN do, and not on what we can't." This is what she did through her life, and a powerful message to all of us through this pandemic and beyond.
I am so very grateful to have known Polly. My heartfelt condolences go out to her whole family of whom she was very proud.

To the Harborne family and friends,
It was with the deepest sorry but also the greatest fondness that I received the news of Mrs Harborne’s passing.
From the first and throughout my days as one of her violin students, she always invited me into her home with her genuinely warm smile and voice, accepted me as I was, and coaxed me gently forward on a journey of discovery. Her love of music was matched by her love for sharing it with others. And her tried and true approach remained the same. Driving up Hillcrest Avenue once again and having the opportunity to watch Mrs Harborne, while she was in her 90s, introduce a new pupil to the violin was a powerful and welcome flashback to my own early days.
Mrs Harborne, you have had such a lasting and profound impact on so many with your musicianship and humanity. Heartfelt thanks for all that you have shown me and my family. Truly, an inspiration.

I have fond memories of Pauline from when I lived in Sackville. She was well into her 90s and still a wonderful musician. I remember presiding at a funeral for a friend of hers in which she was playing a beautiful piece by Felix Mendelssohn. I put it after my message as to my mind it was the most special part of the service. I enjoyed conversations with her and of course we shared a love of classical music. She must have been a most delightful , kind and accomplished teacher . I’m sure her family and friends and students have many happy memories.

My deepest sympathy to Ian, Donald and families, in the loss of our beloved Polly. What a wonderful long life that touched so many families, mine included. How could I ever forget my two year old daughter, Nancy with a 16 th size violin, playing with her five year old brother Ron . The patience and love in her teaching was so special. Pauline’s gift and love of music will long continue through the lives she touched, and I am grateful to have known her, and shared times within the Sackville music teachers, and festival. Sincerely, Vivien Hay Hicks
