Charles, Johanna, Nicolas and Luke
I wondered where my Christmas card was and finally had the heart to search. Mary was a wonderful lady and the world is richer for her passage through it. She was a huge influence on my life and she won't be forgotten by me or Niko.
Our condolences to each of you and to your families. That's a big hole to fill.

Dear Eliot children,
I met your mother when I first came to Greece as a student in 1955. Your dad was secretary at the American School, and I got to know both of them pretty well. Then during the 1970s Mary and I worked side by side season after season on our respective projects on Kea. She was always gracious and helpful, and so sweet-tempered! I can't recall ever seeing her annoyed or angry at anything or anybody for any reason . I trust that your memories of her are as positive and as pleasant as mine.

Dear Charles, JoJo and Nick,
I was so sorry to learn of Mary's death. Thank you, JoJo, for notifying me. Mary and I had corresponded periodically over the past few years, but I know she found it harder to do because of her eyesight. She wrote me about what each of you was doing and was very proud of you all. I worked with your Mom on the Kea excavation staff for many summers. She was a regular there. I remember the summer John (Overbeck) and I brought David to Vourkari for a few weeks. David and Charles were pals and played together there. JoJo and Nick were always running around happily playing also. When we were in Athens, Mary invited us to stay at Gennadian East. She welcomed us and told us to just go find any available bed. The kids slept on the roof, as I recall—an adventure for them. She also offered me tea, with milk, a first for me. My last note from Mary was after you all went to Kea in 2015. I'm glad she was able to return there for a last time. We'll miss her, and Willie!
Love,
Gatewood

Dear Charles, JoJo, Luke, and Nick,
It's been so long but I remember vividly the kindnsses of your mother and father to Linda and me when you all lived at the Gennadeion. Do you remember when Mary rescued the tiny kitten on her way from Vourkari to Ayia Irini? Here in Cincinnati we just learned of her death. I have posted a notice on the ASCSA Alumni FB site.
Love,
Jack

Dear JoJo and family,
I was saddened to hear of your Moms passing. Please accept my sincere sympathy. I remember when you and your family moved to Dorchester from Greece, and how welcoming your Mom always was when I would drop by for some Vanillia!!! (still think about that from time to time!) Take care.

Mrs Eliot was definitely one of the most extraordinarily wonderful teachers I ever had. I can't think of any student who didn't adore her at Tantramar. Her passion for history, for archeology, and of course Greece was infectious.
