Obituary of Gladys Geraldine MacKinnon
It is with sadness, that the family of Gladys Mackinnon announce her passing at the Drew Nursing Home on Saturday, March 22, 2014.
Born on September 4, 1926 in Sackville, New Brunswick, she was the third of nine children of Hilyard and Norma (Campbell) Crossman.
Gladys will be lovingly remembered by two sons, Steven (Natasha) MacKinnon and Colin (Nancy) MacKinnon, both of Sackville; four grandchildren, Rebecca (Adam Hartling), Kate (Omar Stracey), Andrew (Amy Deveau) and Neil (Gabrielle Dallaporta); great-grandson, Ismael Stracey and step-granddaughter, Roxanne; sister, Leona (Hubert) Smith of Moncton NB.; sisters-in-law, Helen (MacKinnon) Wheaton, Gwen Crossman, Marian Crossman, all of Sackville, Pearl Crossman of Riverview, N.B., as well as many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a special friend, Janice Landry; mother of Rebecca and Kate.
Gladys was predeceased by her husband Jesse in 1992; brothers, Hilyard, Rouel and David as well as by her sisters, Gertrude Greene, Mary Louise Proctor, Barbara Jones and Judith Chambers.
A resident of Sackville all of her life, at the age of 15, her first employment was at the Sackville Paper Box Factory. This was followed a year later as a telephone operator with the New Brunswick Telephone Company’s Sackville office; work she thoroughly enjoyed. After attaining and working in the position of Chief Operator in Sackville, she left to raise her family. On returning to work she was employed at Steadman’s Variety Store followed by a number of years with Mount Allison University as telephone and switchboard operator. She was a member of the Sackville Main Street Baptist Church, a life member of the United Baptist Women’s Missionary Society and leader for many years with the CGIT (Canadian Girls in Training). She was an avid reader, enjoyed interior decorating, painting and spending time with family.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Campbell’s Funeral Home, 89 Bridge Street, Sackville, N.B. (364-8188). Visitation will take place at the funeral home on Saturday, March 29, 2014 from 10 am -12 pm after which the funeral service will take place at 2 pm with Pastor Andrew Swanson officiating. The burial will take place in the spring at the Westcock Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Gladys may be made to the Parkinson Society of Canada or to the charity of one’s choice.
