Obituary of Robert Murray Dobson

Dorchester, N.B.- It is with sadness, but peace of heart, that we announce the passing of Murray Dobson, on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at the Drew Nursing Home in Sackville. Murray was 92 years of age. Born on November 3, 1920 in Moncton, N.B., he was the son of the late Laura (Cunningham) and Frank Ashley Dobson. Pop was a life-long resident of Dorchester, having been raised in the Guard Row. He spent much of his time at his uncle Ed’s farm in nearby Middleton. Pop was a member of the Dorchester High School Hockey Champs of 1940. During the war, he enlisted in the RCAF, serving with the #4 Salvage Squadron in Eastern Air Command. After the war, he worked on a cattle ranch near Red Deer, Alberta before coming home in 1947. He worked in the lumber industry until he started driving truck for Armour Transport in 1962. In 1987 he was awarded the Atlantic Truck Driver of the year award and also retired that same year. Always a passionate outdoors man, he was then able to live full time in his camper for many summers roaming the backwoods of New Brunswick, fishing , telling stories and enjoying his retirement. Murray will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Anne Dobson of Dorchester, N.B.; two sons, James Dobson of Portage Vale, N.B. and Allan Dobson of Dorchester, N.B.; two sisters, Ann Winters of Seattle, Washington and Betty (Don) Hicks of Kamloops, BC; three grandchildren, Shane Buck, Laura Buck and Scotty Stairs; many nieces and nephews and former wife, Anna Knockwood. He was pre-deceased by his sister, Maude McGrain and by his brother, Glen Dobson. Arrangements have been entrusted to Campbell’s Funeral Home, 89 Bridge Street, Sackville, N.B. (364-8188). Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Friday, January 18, 2013 from 7-9 pm. The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #26, Sackville will hold a memorial service at 7 pm the evening of visitation and all are welcome to attend. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 1 pm with Rev. Lloyd Bruce officiating. Burial will take place in the spring in the Dorchester Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Murray may be made to the Atlantic Salmon Federation, Dorchester Fire Department or to the charity of ones choice.
