Obituary of Boris Veniaminovich Dekster

Sackville, N.B.- Boris Dekster, age 69, passed away quietly at the Saint John Regional Hospital , surrounded by his family on Sunday, September 21, 2008. Born on October 8, 1938, in Leningrad, Russia, he was the son of the late Veniamin Moiseevich Zeygerman and Faina Aronovna Dekster. Boris will be sadly missed by his wife Tatiana, his son Paul, and daughters Sonya, Lisa and Lena. After receiving his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the Leningrad Branch of the V.A. Steklov Mathematical Institute, Boris moved to North America where he taught at the University of Notre Dame, the University of Toronto, and then at Mount Allison University until his retirement in 2003. Even after retirement, Boris continued to be a dedicated Mathematician, teaching as a Professor Emeritus, and always striving to add to his list of publications. Boris was a world traveler and paid frequent visits to his hometown of St. Petersburg where he is missed by many friends. Boris was a thoughtful, loyal and generous friend and neighbor. He was an excellent chef, and loved to entertain guests in his home. Boris had a strong love for nature, and loved camping in the wilderness, picking wild mushrooms, boating and swimming. An excellent athlete, Boris also loved volleyball, badminton, running, cross-country and especially down-hill skiing. Being an avid reader of literature, Boris always had interesting stories and anecdotes to tell, showing his depth of knowledge and sense of humor. Boris had a deep love for living things, especially for his cats, who will continue to keep his favorite chair warm. Boris was a loving husband and Papa. He will always be deeply loved by his family and friends. Arrangements are entrusted to Campbell’s Funeral Home, 89 Bridge Street, Sackville, N.B. from where visitation will take place on Tuesday, September 23, 2008 from 7-9 PM. The funeral service will take place at the funeral home, on Wednesday, September 24, 2008 at 1 PM with Rev. Susan King-Darby officiating. Burial will follow in the Sackville Cemetery. Donations in memory of Boris may be made to WAAG (We’re All Animal Guardians,Wolfville, N.S.), SPCA or to the charity of one’s choice.
