Dear Mary and family,
It is with sorrow that I learned this morning of John’s passing. I feel as if I have known you both for most of my 51 years in Sackville. Some of the memories are hazy, but some remain astonishingly clear. Many revolved in and around your beautiful house in Upper Sackville. Some around the Marshlands Inn. Over many years we loved hearing about your exciting sojourns in Southern Spain, and one day, John made it possible for Marilyn, my sister and me to stay in your villa there for a few weeks! John was ever so helpful to us as we enjoyed the Spanish/English mix of people and cuisines, cluing us in on how to get around from there to see much of the rest of Southern Spain. Even funny things like how to get your car in and out of the house parking space! It was a real coming together of Sackvillians and a Spanish adventure. What fun John and Mary made it! Thank you for all that you gave to this town and to the people living here. Our deepest condolences to you, Mary, and to all the children and grandchildren. Janet and Marilyn

John brought his gentle good humour to all that he met. After his "retirement" (there were several because he didn't feel he was done contributing to science long after his various positions changed), John felt life was too dull and he joined my lab to work on ticks. He brought not only his deep expertise in all things protein but also he gentle wisdom and respectful teaching of students. We loved having him there and he was the most regular and interesting contributor to our lab meetings. For a period, the lab membership spanned ages 17-70 and I treasure the video clip from one of the media events that showed John, our highschool intern and I chatting by the departmental skeleton cabinet. The audio was cut but we were all laughing because John was picking out which person was exemplified best by each skeleton. I miss him enormously and offer my deepest condolences to his family. You were the rock around which his life revolved. We are all better people for John having shared his life with us. Vett Lloyd

John was such a lovely man. I got to know him when he worked in Jack Stewart's lab. We were in the lab together the morning of 9/11. I was scared and John tried to reassure me. My condolences to the whole family but especially Mary.

We are glad that managed to see John and Mary one more time on what was our probable final trip to the Maritimes. It has been many years since we last saw them, 2015 I believe, and feel very fortunate that we had that last visit. We have fond memories of many an evening of good food, wine and conversation when we were living in Sackville before we retired and headed for Belize. Our condolences to the family in their time of mourning and as we ay here ; May he rest in peace and rise in glory. John and Louise Bailey

My condolences to you Damian and your family. I had the good fortune to run in to your dad at the Independent last summer having not seen him since the days when he worked with my dad at the crime lab. What a nice man. I am so sorry for your loss.

We remember John’s and Mary’s hosting when we would dine at the Marshlands. His obituary is spot on calm and gentle. Always a delight to be welcomed at the Inn. Mary, we are so sorry to read this news. May the Lord be particularly close to you and your family
