Peter and I first met Joe, Elaine and Rhonda when they came to Australia to celebrate the marriage of Jay to our daughter Sue. During the time they spent with us we were able to share not only the wedding and all that that entailed but also to take them to see some of our country-side and wildlife which helped us to get to know our Canadian ‘in-laws’ and I have fond memories of them all. ( A small anecdote of their time with us - the first morning they were woken by a great cacophony of noise from the gum trees outside their bedroom window “was it monkeys”? No, they were our (laughing) Kookaburras - very, very noisy birds.)
I am so very thankful for their support for Jay, Sue, Gus and Archie and their constant presence in their lives via family holidays, Skype, etc. So it is with great sadness to know of Joe’s passing and my heart goes out particularly to Elaine at this very sad time.
My sincere condolences and sympathy to Elaine, Jay and Rhonda and, of course, to Sue, Gus and Archie. They will all miss him terribly.

We met Joe and Elaine at Jay and Sue’s wedding and the times when they came and spent Christmas with our whole family at Aireys inlet. It was wonderful to be able to include Jays parents and Rhonda in our crazy family Christmas’s always lots of fun and laughs. Joe always had a story to tell or a solution to any problem, he was funny and friendly and we will miss him. Our thoughts are with you Elaine, Jay, Rhonda, Sue, Gus & Archie, I know you will miss Joe but you are lucky to have so many wonderful memories of your time with him.

My Poppy truly never failed to put a smile on my face, he brought life to every room he was in, always cracking jokes. Our family trips to Canada to see Poppy, Nanny and Rhonda, are some of my greatest memories. Christmas in July, white Christmas and summer at the Indian Arm lake are moments I will cherish with Poppy forever, he would always have some gadget or toy for me to play with. Love you forever and always Poppy.

It was my privilege to get to know Joe. Every conversation was fun and informative and his jokes were as dry as the Sahara desert, but we both shared that in common. LOL A true patriot, his service and dedication to his family and his country are admirable. Rest in peace and eternal love Joe; you will be forever missed. My deepest condolences to you Elaine and your children. xo

Elaine and family, Velvet and I are very sorry to hear about Joe.
Some years ago, I was a young(ish) officer cadet conversing with an admin clerk at the Personnel Records counter at CFB Winnipeg when, in my peripheral vision, I noticed a compact man arriving. After a few moments, this guy remarked, "I can see we're going to have a lot of trouble here, Sir."
I thought his use of "Sir" somewhat more deferential than that to which Nav School students were accustomed, and the rest of his comment perhaps slightly offensive to the now overworked clerk as I mumbled an inarticulate "...Yeah..." in response. When the clerk left me at the counter for his desk, I turned to face this fellow and reflexively clocked, in order: uniform - Green (they all were). Rank - Sergeant. Command badge - Air Command. Nametag - McSHEFFERY. Finally, facial features - shit eating grin that, only upon recent reflection did I realize probably also meant, "Yes, this guy is certainly thick enough to be an officer; perhaps even Chief of Defence Staff material."
The only two J.E. McSheffery's in the CF, and one more than either of us realized, had arrived at the same office at the same time, and the likelihood of the admin clerk being confused or thinking he was being punked must have been near-certain. Joe and I exchanged family trees and of course, his and my middle names trace back to the same ancestor, our great grandfather, Grampie Ned, who died in 1932. See Jerry's attachment above or below.
After divergent lives and careers, it was a pleasure to reacquaint with Joe and to bore Elaine with McSheffery family history when we learned they were living in nearby Sackville.

We love you and will miss you so much Joe.
You welcomed me into your home and your family nearly 30 years ago, and I have been a part of it ever since.
Your cheekiness, your chuckle, your jokes and your wisdom will always be with me.
So proud of your grandchildren Gus and Archie. Many an adventure has been had visiting Nanny and Poppy. The boys first snow, their first white Christmas, trips, exploration and water play on the pond at Indian Arm. Getting rugged up for a -40'C day in Winnipeg when it looks like a +40 day in Australia if you just look up at the sunny blue sky and not down at the freezing snow. Road trips, lobster meals and places like Twillingate, Bell Island and Peggy's Cove. Always so special visiting and being wrapped in your warmth and love.
Thank goodness for your air force career, that allowed you to pick up on an incorrect airport code that had us flying from Australia to Saint John NB instead of St John's NL. An emergency phone call to me to alert me saved us a lot of time and money as a family.
Joe and Elaine have always been an example to me of what a life of love and dedicated partnership looks like.

To Elaine, Jason, Rhonda, Sue, Gus, and Archie, and Joe’s family and friends; We are so sad that Joe has left us. When we first met Joe and Elaine, about twenty-five years ago at a birthday party at our cottage on Indian Arm Pond in Newfoundland we didn’t know then that we would have such a long and wonderful relationship. We have been the best of friends (like family) since that time. We were neighbors in Newfoundland and we both moved to Sackville, NB about the same time.
We have many fond memories of times spent together, from snowmobiling and winter boil-ups to bonfires and many times enjoying meals and chats together. Joe spent years in the military which developed his many acronyms for just about all situations - which usually needed an explanation for our benefit. One in particular comes to mind and he often used whenever Pam or I managed to have him at a loss for words (which was quite rare). He would then simply say KMAP. I leave it to your imagination to decipher this one.
We have spent the last ten years in Sackville living only 5 minutes apart. Any time I had questions about some technical problem I could always count on Joe for the answer and help when needed. Once when I asked him about the best caulking compound for my project, he would tell me the common name, and its exact composition, and how best to apply it. This ability spanned just about every topic imaginable. I could always depend on him to provide me with the information I needed. He could even manage to come up with a clutch pool shot to help us beat the ladies in our many games of pool.
We will truly miss our dear friend, Rest in Peace Joe.

He was our amazing Poppy. With all my love I will miss him forever. Trips to Canada to visit were the highlights of my life.

Sorry to hear of Joe's passing. I served in the military as well and occasionally I would receive email intended for Joe since our first initial and last name were the same. We exchanged emails often while he was in Winnipeg and I was posted at CFB Trenton. As I kid I knew his Grandfather Eddie McSheffery well. I enjoyed a couple visits when he returned to NB in retirement and catching up on family history. Our condolences to you Elaine and your family. I have shared his obituary with some of the Moose Mountain McSheffery's. Our prayers as you grieve in his passing. Blessings
