Obituary of Marielle Ines Carpenter

It is with deep love and sadness that we share the passing of Marie‑Lorraine Inés Carpenter, a devoted daughter, sister, and cherished friend.

Marielle, known as Nena to us, and Nina to her school friends, was born on February 10, 1965, in Madrid, Spain, to Geoffrey Alan Carpenter (Brisbane, Qld. Australia) and Lorraine Carpenter (Farnham, Québec, Canada, 1931–2021). She came to Canada in 1967 with her older brother Paul, beginning a life that would be rooted in both cultures and shaped by curiosity, resilience, and quiet strength.

She grew up in Sackville, New Brunswick, and pursued her studies at Mount Allison University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts, and later at Concordia University, completing a Bachelor of Science. Marielle also pursued certificates in technical and journalism writing, Spanish studies in Granada, and engaged in diverse interests including civil law, photography, and calligraphy.

Marielle lived an active and engaged life. She was an avid cyclist, played tennis and badminton, loved dragon boating, and volunteered with the Technical Writing Society of Montreal. She took great joy in the arts, meaningful conversation, and sharing good food with those she loved. She returned to Sackville for Christmas with her parents and family, and for summer holidays at the family cottage at Parlee Beach. Her love of foreign experiences led her to Spain and to Strasbourg through a university exchange program, cycling in Spain with her great friend Peter and travel to the Caribbean where she loved the sun and the beaches.

Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of seven, Marielle lived with grace and determination in the face of lifelong health challenges. When her kidneys failed, her sister Élise gave her the gift of life through donation—an extraordinary act of love that allowed Marielle to continue living fully. That gift endured for 25 remarkable years.

In later years, Marielle faced increasing health complications and reduced mobility, which gradually limited her world. Though she suffered, she remained steadfast in spirit—warm, thoughtful, and whilst living with depression due to all these issues,  remained joyful in the company of others. She delighted in visits, shared laughter, candy treats, and the hugs of her nephews. She never forgot a birthday or special occasion. Her love was constant, even when her body could no longer keep pace.

Marielle will be remembered for her gentle nature, her resilience, her love of family, and her deep affection for animals, especially her four‑legged companions. Marielle’s love of animals was a defining part of who she was. Throughout her life, she shared her home and heart with her beloved cats, whom she cherished and spoiled endlessly. She was a passionate advocate for animal welfare, regularly signing petitions and supporting causes that protected animals. Her compassion extended far beyond people; she believed every creature deserved kindness, care, and respect. She taught us, through her life, the enduring strength of kindness.

She is survived by her father Geoffrey; her siblings Paul Geoffrey José Carpenter (partner Rebekah) and their son Joseph, Cassandra and Tyler of Sackville, NB, Anne‑Marie Soledad (Marisol) Carpenter (husband Edward) and their sons Gabriel, Fabien and Sébastien of Aylmer, Québec, and Élise Michele‑Ange Laura Carpenter of Raleigh, N.C. as well as relatives in Québec, Australia and Denmark; and by all those whose lives she touched with her generosity of spirit.

Marielle leaves us with a simple but lasting message: be kind to those who struggle, love those who need our help, and care for one another deeply.

She will remain in our hearts always.

A memorial service will be held for our dear Marielle at Campbell’s Funeral Home on Wednesday 24^th June at 1 pm followed by a reception.
