Obituary of George John De Benedetti

 It is with deep sadness that the family of George De Benedetti, age 85, announces his passing on Monday, June 8, 2026 at the Drew Nursing Home in Sackville.

Born in Montreal, Quebec on October 1, 1940, he was the son of the late Aurelio De Benedetti and Louisa (Lucertini) De Benedetti.

George was a professor of Economics at Mount Allison University. He was a founding member of the Mount Allison Faculty Association, and served as Chief negotiator, President and many other Executive positions. He also served on the Board of the Federation of the New Brunswick Faculty Association and was part of the executive of the Canadian Association of University Teachers chairing its Collective Bargaining and Economics Benefits Committee. Throughout his career, he was a strong advocate for 2SLGBTQIA+ and all minority rights. George believed that every person should be respected and treated equally. Every year, a prize is given in his name to a student who demonstrates advocacy work and social justice activism.

He was a loving father to his two daughters and supported them in everything they did. Both daughters figure skated. Tired of waiting on the bleachers, he decided to join them and became an avid adult figure skater.

He had a lifelong passion for photography, especially for taking photos of the beauty of the local area.

In later years, he was a curler and a golfer, He also had a keen sense of humour and liked to make those around him smile. 

George will be remembered by his wife, Angelica (Singer) De Benedetti; his daughter, Dr. Monica De Benedetti (Brian Pelletier) of Ancaster, ON; his sister, Mary Lou (David) Wayland of Montreal, PQ; his brother-in-law, Dennis Kukulsky of Toronto, ON, as well as by several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was pre-deceased by his cherished daughter, Christiana De Benedetti, as well as by his sister, Carol Ann Kukulsky.

The family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Drew Nursing Home staff and the residents on Chignecto Unit for all of their kindness and care shown to George during his stay there. Every individual there showed great compassion for him and the family.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Erin Campbell and staff of Campbell’s Funeral Home, 89 Bridge Street, Sackville, N.B. (506) 364-8188. In keeping with George’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visiting hours or funeral services.

If so desired, donations in memory of George may be made to Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) or to the charity of one’s choice.
