Obituary of Beryl Joyce Blackburn

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that the family of Beryl Blackburn of Amherst, NS, announces her peaceful passing on June 3, 2026 at Northumberland Hall, Shannex, surrounded by her family.

Born in Sackville, NB, Beryl was the eldest daughter of the late Roy and Amy (Trenholm) Blackburn.

Growing up on the family farm in Aulac, she learned at a young age how to make a little go a long way, waste not - want not. The kitchen is where she spent most of her time doing what she loved to do - perfecting recipes, making her pickles and cooking up a storm. She enjoyed taking her pickles to various markets and craft sales where she was in her element socializing, talking, smiling and making new friends. Beryl’s quick wit, compassion, kind heart and gift-of-gab had a way of drawing people to her. Her love of baking and cooking found her compiling her very own cookbook called ‘From Tattered Pages’, in memory of her mother. Another ambition was opening her own lunchroom, once again she was in her glory feeding wholesome, hearty homemade soups and biscuits to all of her customers.

All who knew Beryl, knew she loved a good time, whether it was running the roads from dawn to midnight or frequenting local restaurants with her friends, she lived life to the fullest. She could often be spotted at yard sales in search of a good bargain along with collecting pretty cups and saucers and cookbooks to add to her collection.

Above everything, her greatest joy was being the best mom and grandmother. She is survived by her two daughters, Bonnie (Sterling) Carter, Amherst, NS and Pamela (Rodney) Gray, Fenwick, NS. She was nana to five grandchildren, Caitlin (Ryan) MacPherson, Paige Willett, Amanda Willett, Blake Carter and Eva Gray; she is also survived by her sister, Carol Hicks and several nieces and nephews.

Beryl was predeceased by her infant son Russell Maxwell, as well as by her brother, Eldon Blackburn.

The family would like to thank the staff at Shannex for their wonderful care while she was a resident there. Special thank you to Warren, for his outstanding care for our mom.

~She measured love in heaping cups and stirred it with a smile. Her hands created warmth and joy that stayed a little while. The oven cools, the apron rests, the recipe is done, but the sweetness of her legacy lives on in everyone.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Erin Campbell and staff of Campbell’s Funeral Home, 89 Bridge Street, Sackville N.B. (506) 364-8188. In keeping with Beryl’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visiting hours or funeral services. The burial will take place in the Point de Bute Cemetery.

If so desired, donations in memory of Beryl may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or to the charity of one’s choice.
