Madelyn Wheaton

Obituary of Madelyn Rose Wheaton

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of our dear mother, Madelyn Rose (Crossman) Wheaton. She entered the Kingdom of Heaven to join our father on February 14th, 2026, at the Sackville Memorial Hospital at the age of 88.

Maddy was born on December 15th, 1937, in Sackville, NB to Elmer and Helen (Fillmore) Crossman. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.  Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Retias Wheaton (2003), her siblings: Gary (Donna), Donald, Jocelyn (Ken) (William), Alma (Reg) and Neil; as well as several extended family members.

Maddy worked at the Sackville Paper Box Company as a teenager, until shortly after marrying her husband in 1955. They started their family soon after marriage, and Maddy became a busy homemaker. An avid baker and a skilled sewing machine operator, the only thing missing from her home were peas! (If you know, you know). After their fourth child, Randy was born, Maddy re-entered the workforce as a custodian at Mount Allison University where she worked until her retirement. Above all else, Maddy’s main job (and I think she would say the most important), was being an excellent mother, grandmother & great grandmother. Her continuous worrying about all of us truly showed us that you never stop being a parent. She loved having her grandchildren come visit and was always picking up new movies, games, and toys so there would be something special to enjoy each time they came over. Nothing gave her more joy than to see the smiles on the kids’ faces, whether it was eating some of her delicious brown bread or planning their next sleepover.

Left to mourn Maddy are her children: Kathy (John Phinney), Tony (Carol), Danny (Lois), Randy (Wanda), and Jody (Cindy); 17 grandchildren: Amy, Ashley, Renee, Laura, Kyle, Travis, Mark, Katie, Jessie, Jenna, Anthony, Evan, Katelyn, Noah, Samuel, Retias and Jacob; 16 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Cassie Harper, Dianne Wheaton, Ruth Crossman and Linda Crossman; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Maddy’s family would like to offer sincere thanks to anybody who provided loving care over the years.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Erin Campbell and staff of Campbell’s Funeral Home, 89 Bridge Street, Sackville N.B. (506) 364-8188. By request, no funeral or visitation. A private graveside service will be held at a later date at the Midgic Cemetery.

If so desired, donations in Maddy’s memory can be made to the IWK or a charity of one’s choice.

On-line condolences and sharing of memories may be forwarded to the family through our website www.campbellsfuneralhome.com or by visiting the funeral home Facebook page.
