Obituary of Veva Darlene (Hicks) Curwin

It is with great sadness that the family of Veva Darlene (Hicks) Curwin announces her passing at the Sackville Memorial Hospital on Friday, August 29, 2025. Veva passed away peacefully with her family by her side at the age of 78.

Born in Sackville, NB on February 13, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Gerald Brunis Hicks and Shirley Jean (Hicks).

Veva was the epitome of courage and strength. She was the heart of her family—loving, kind, generous, and devoted as a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Her family was her treasure, always putting them first.

Much of her life was spent in service, sharing kindness and warmth with those she met as a waitress at beloved places like The Palace Grill, Borden’s Restaurant and Mel’s Tea Room. Later, she found her calling in childcare, where she and Gary opened their hearts to many children, becoming forever known as “Nanna and Papa”.

Veva delighted in life’s simple pleasures—long drives with Gary down unfamiliar roads, just to discover where they might lead. She loved any time she spent with family and friends. Veva found joy in music, especially music from her younger years, and most especially, Elvis. She was a reader, a wonderful cook, and a woman whose laughter and love filled every room.

Through life’s storms and sunshine alike, Veva’s faith never wavered. She often turned to the pages of her Bible, finding comfort and strength in its words.

No matter where she lived, Veva had a gift for turning a house into a home—warm, cozy, and welcoming. A place where love lingered in the air, just as her spirit lingers now in the hearts of all who knew her.

Veva will be lovingly remembered by her husband of forty nine years, Gary Lee Curwin; her daughters, Kellie Curwin, Erin Curwin and Tammy (Mike) MacDougal and her children, Jaden and Ryan Fitzherbert; her brother, Kevin Hicks; her sister-in-law, Linda (Allan) Coates; her niece, Carrie (Chris) Harris; her nephew, Jeff (Twila) Coates, as well as by extended family and friends.

Besides her parents, she was pre-deceased by her granddaughter, Marlie Jean Curwin.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Erin Campbell and staff of Campbell’s Funeral Home, 89 Bridge Street, Sackville N.B. (506) 364-8188. Visiting hours to celebrate Veva’s life will take place at Campbell’s Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 3, 2025 from 6-8 pm and all are invited to attend. The funeral service will take place at the funeral home on Thursday, September 4, 2025 at 2 pm with Charis Holmes officiating. The burial will take place in the Westcock Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Veva may be made to the Sackville Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, IWK Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House or to the charity of one’s choice.
