Obituary of Hazel Elizabeth Hazlehurst

Sackville, N.B.- It is with sadness that the family of Hazel Elizabeth Hazlehurst, affectionately known to her family and friends as ‘Poppy’, announce her peaceful passing on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at the Drew Nursing Home in Sackville, N.B. Born on May 5, 1926 in Sackville, N.B., she was the daughter of the late R.G. and Helen (Ford) Henderson. Poppy grew up in Sackville, attended the Mt. A School for Girls and Ladies College and was later employed by the University as a secretary. She married R.N. (Bob) Hazlehurst in 1949 and they moved shortly after to Mexico City where two of her four sons were born. Bob and Poppy returned to Sackville in 1953 where her other boys were born. In Sackville, Poppy enjoyed curling, golf and was a member of the I.O.D.E. She was predeceased by her brothers, John G. Henderson and James R. Henderson and by her son Paul who passed away in 1984 as the result of an accident. Poppy loved spending as much time as possible at the family cottage built by her grandfather, Alex Ford, at the ‘Cape’ (Tormentine). She will be sadly missed by her loving husband of 61 years, Bob; sons, John (Peggy) of Truro, N.S., Jim (Carla) of Moncton, N.B. and Peter (Louise) of Bedford, N.S.; grandchildren, Mark, Katie, Laura, Kevin, Steve, Ben and Alex; sisters-in-law, Margaret Henderson and Doreen Henderson and by several nieces and nephews. Arrangements are entrusted to Campbell’s Funeral Home, 89 Bridge Street, Sackville, N.B. (364-8188). In keeping with Poppy’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visiting hours. The funeral service will take place at Campbell’s Funeral Home on Friday, March 26, 2010 at 2 PM with Rev. Jane Doull officiating. A reception will follow the service. Burial will take place at a later date in the Sackville Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy and in lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Poppy would be appreciated toward the Canadian Cancer Society Research Fund or to the charity of one’s choice. Her family would like to thank the staff at the Drew Nursing Home and Sackville Memorial Hospital for their wonderful care.
